What Are Power Management ICs?

Power Management Integrated Circuits (short for PMIC) is a chip that is responsible for the transformation, distribution, detection and other power management duties in an electronic device system. It is mainly responsible for identifying the CPU power supply amplitude, generating the corresponding short moment wave, and promoting the power output of the back-end circuit. Common power management chips include LMG3410R050, UCC12050, BQ25790, HIP6301, IS6537, RT9237, ADP3168, KA7500, TL494 and so on.

A typical PMIC includes one or more switching DC-to-DC converters, such as buck and boost converters, along with linear regulators like Low Dropout Regulators (LDOs). At the core of a PMIC is the power transistor, a large transistor occupying several square millimeters and designed as multiple banks of transistors. These parallel devices must have very low resistance (RdsON) to minimize power loss and heat, thereby improving power conversion efficiency.

What does a power management IC do?

All electronic devices have a power supply, but different systems have different requirements for power supply. In order to maximize the performance of the electronic system, it is necessary to choose the most suitable power management mode. Knowing their functions are important for engineers and designers to choose the right IC chip for their power supply projects. The purposes of using power management IC are mainly including:
Convert and regulate the input power to various levels required by different components of a device. This includes step-down (buck) converters, step-up (boost) converters, and linear regulators.
They can distribute the correct amount of power to each subsystem within a device, ensuring that all parts function correctly without overloading.
Managing the order in which different components are powered on and off to ensure stable operation and to protect sensitive components from damage due to improper power sequencing.
For battery-powered devices, PMICs are crucial in managing charging, discharging, and monitoring battery health to ensure longevity and safety.
Optimizing power consumption by implementing techniques such as dynamic voltage scaling and sleep modes to reduce energy use when full power is not required.
PMICs include various protection features such as over-voltage protection (OVP), under-voltage protection (UVP), over-current protection (OCP), and thermal shutdown to safeguard the device and its components from damage due to electrical faults or overheating.

Classification of Power Management IC

Power Management ICs can be classified based on their functionality and applications. And the commonly used are voltage regulators, it can be divided into linear regulators and switching regulators.
Linear Regulators (LDOs) Provide a simple solution for voltage regulation with low noise and fast transient response but are less efficient compared to switching regulators. Different with LDOs, switching regulator include buck converters, boost converters, and buck-boost converters, which offer higher efficiency by converting power using high-frequency switching.

Battery Management ICs (BMICs)
It is a specialized PMICs designed to manage the charging and discharging of batteries, monitor battery health, and ensure safety. They are mainly used extensively in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems.

LED Drivers
Power management ICs enable to provide the necessary current to drive LEDs in various lighting applications, they are aim to ensure consistent brightness and efficiency in LED lighting systems.

Power Supply Controllers
This is mainly for managing and controlling power supplies for various components within a system, including server farms, telecommunications equipment, and industrial machinery.

PMICs for Specific Applications
These include PMICs designed for use in specific devices like smartphones, tablets, wearable devices, and automotive applications. They integrate multiple functions to meet the unique power requirements of these applications.

Applications of Power Management IC

Power management IC chip is widely used in various electronic equipment, mainly used to monitor and manage the power supply voltage, current and other parameters, to ensure the normal operation and long life of the equipment. At present, power management chips are the most widely used in these fields, such as:
Consumer electronics like smartphones, tablets, laptops, and wearable devices in our daily life.
Automotive industry including popular electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
Industrial machinery and automation systems.
Medical devices, such as portable diagnostic equipment and wearable health monitors.
Telecommunications
Solar power systems and energy storage devices.
